Julio Urias effectively wild in 2015 spring debut

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias made his first Cactus League appearance of 2015 on Friday, and was wild in his 1⅔ innings of work in the Dodgers' 10-1 win over the Brewers at Maryvale Baseball Park.

The 18-year-old left-hander walked three and went to three balls against one other batter, throwing 42 pitches, including 24 strikes. He also threw a wild pitch.

"He's got a lot of confidence," said Dodgers Spanish language broadcaster and former young left-handed pitching phenom Fernando Valenzuela. "He had good stuff. He was just a little wild."

Urias also had his high points, with two strikeouts and a pickoff of old friend Elian Herrera trying to steal second base. None of the seven batters Urias faced hit the ball out of the infield.

"He looked like a guy making his first start of spring training. A little bit erratic, a little bit anxious," said catcher A.J. Ellis. "When you're erratic and anxious, but still have electric stuff, you can get away with a lot of things. We saw a little bit of everything."

He struck out Shane Peterson swinging on a fastball in the third inning, then got Scooter Gennett swinging on a bouncing curve ball two batters later.

"I got a lot of confidence from that first inning," Urias said.

After back-to-back walks to Aramis Ramirez and Khris Davis, Urias was pulled with two outs in the fourth inning, having reached his pitch limit.

"Today they just weren't chasing," Valenzuela said. "Not bad for a first outing."

"The future is bright. If he stays with the process, he's going to be really special," Ellis said. "He's a really sharp guy. He's got a brilliant mind for pitching. He knows what he wants to do out there. When he gets his command sharper, you'll see him roll through lineups."

Yankees sign infielder Mat Gamel to minor league deal

$

Can't have too many infielders, right?

The Yankees have signed corner infielder Mat Gamel to a minor league contract this week, according to Baseball America's Matt Eddy.  Gamel has mostly played first and third during his (brief) major league career, and while he's never really stuck in the big leagues, it never hurts to take a low-risk flyer, especially with all the injury concerns the Yankees have.

In just 106 major league games and 269 plate appearances, Gamel has hit a paltry .229/.305/.367 with a 78 wRC+.  He did perform pretty well in both 2010 and 2011 at the minor league level, posting a triple slash of .309/.387/.511 with a 127 wRC+ in 2010 and hitting .310/.372/.540 with a 121 wRC+ in 2011 (both years he spent in the Brewers system).  In fact, Gamel was once one of the Brewers top prospects, and Baseball America ranked him as the 34th best prospect in baseball in 2009.

Unfortunately, he never quite put it all together in the majors, and he's been out of baseball altogether since 2012.  Gamel has torn his right ACL multiple times - once chasing down a pop up in 2012 and again in 2013 before injuring his knee yet again in 2014 while working out at home.

Obviously this signing probably will amount to nothing and we'll never see anything of Gamel anywhere close to the majors.  Little seems to be known of even where the Yankees are considering fitting Gamel in, as first base is locked up at all three minor league levels.  The best case scenario is probably him finding some at bats as the DH in Trenton or Scranton, so at least the Yankees can see if Gamel has anything left in the tank.

Fun fact: Gamel is the older brother of Yankee sprospect Ben Gamel, who played outfield for Trenton in 2014.

Dodgers vs. Brewers starting lineups: Brandon McCarthy makes first spring start

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Brandon McCarthy makes his first spring training start for the Dodgers on Sunday afternoon against the Brewers at Camelback Ranch.

The right-hander signed a four-year, $48 million contract in the offseason, one of two additions to the Dodgers starting rotation in December. The other, Brett Anderson, starts Monday in Scottsdale against the Giants.

Mike Fiers starts for the Brewers.

Carl Crawford, who fouled a ball off his right shin on Saturday, is out of the lineup on Sunday but that was planned, having played in games the previous two days. His swelling subsided overnight and he is feeling better this morning.

Chris Heisey gets the start in left field after seeing time in right field and center field in games in the last week.

Enrique Hernandez leads off for the Dodgers and starts at third base, after seeing time at both second base and shortstop so far in camp.

Alex Guerrero, 6-for-9 with a home run in his four games so far, is slated to play third base in reserve on Sunday, his third game at the position. Sunday will mark Guerrero's fifth game in five days.

The five-gamers club after Sunday will also include O`Koyea Dickson, slated to play first base in reserve, starting designated hitter Scott Schebler, shortstop Corey Seager, right fielder Kyle Jensen, and Darnell Sweeney, playing center field on Sunday.

Other Dodgers in reserve on Sunday include catcher Chris O`Brien, along with Erisbel Arruebarrena at second base and Matt Carson in left field.

Other Dodgers scheduled to pitch after McCarthy are Adam Liberatore, Sergio Santos, Josh Ravin and Juan Nicasio.

Brandon McCarthy 'utilitarian' in first spring effort

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Brandon McCarthy struck out two in two innings in his spring training debut with the Dodgers on Sunday against the Brewers at Camelback Ranch.

McCarthy allowed one run on two hits - a single by Gerardo Parra followed by a double by Carlos Gomez - in his two innings of work, throwing an efficient 26 pitches. But more than the results, McCarthy logged another day at the office, getting ready for the regular season.

"I got a better idea of what I need to work on, and where I'm at with some things. It was good to get that out of the way," McCarthy said. "That first inning, you're more nervous and scared to remember what to do. The second inning, I got back into it and felt like I settled down and came away with some positives."

After the run scoring double in the first inning, McCarthy retired his final five batters faced. He finished his day by throwing another roughly 20 pitches in the bullpen, and continued to improve on his delivery.

"Some of the things that were bugging me from the game, I took those down there and tried to iron them out a little bit," McCarthy said. "A lot of it was just mechanics on the curveball and staying through it. Down in the pen I felt like I got better, and I'm becoming more body aware, which is something I want with each given day, where you just become more aware of what's right and what's wrong. By the time you leave here you feel like you're in midseason form in understanding what your body is doing."

Knowing his body and the ability to command a baseball were traits of McCarthy mentioned by manager Don Mattingly prior to Sunday's opening start for the right-hander.

"For us, he's a guy who throws a baseball where he wants, and those kind of guys fit it right with what we do," Mattingly said. "We always feel like if we have guys who can get the ball to spots, we're going to get outs. Most guys have holes, and he's able to get the ball where he wants."

McCarthy has pitched in nine big league seasons and this is his 13th spring training, so he's learned a thing or two along the way. The Dodgers are also his sixth team, but despite his four-year, $48 million contract, McCarthy said he didn't feel the need to impress his new teammates right from the get go in his first spring tilt, something he might have done a decade ago.

"The first time I got traded, I felt like the hardest I have ever thrown was that first spring training game, and then I realized that was pointless," McCarthy recalled. "It becomes more utilitarian in spring training games, just get what you need out of it, as cliche as it is get your work in. Now I just treat it like I was with any other team, just learn what I need, then move on."

One spring start down, five more to go as McCarthy readies himself for the regular season.

A Monday Thinker: Name the spring training roster

Get your brain going on this Monday morning with a quiz asking you to name 56 of the players in big league camp.

We're only a few days into Cactus League play, but in their first four games of the 2015 spring season the Milwaukee Brewers have already used 49 players, including 26 position players and 23 pitchers.

All told, the Brewers have 58 players invited to major league camp this spring. Two of them were late additions to the roster: Francisco Rodriguez and infielder Donnie Murphy aren't included here. But friend of the site Matt Selby wants to know: How many of the other 56 can you name?

In the interest of full disclosure I'll tell you that I got 38 on my first try.

The usual Sporcle rules apply here: Post your score in the comments, and please be aware of the fact that comments on this post may contain spoilers.

Have fun, and don't forget to post your score in the comments!

This Weekend's Results

Dodgers 10, Brewers 1

The Dodgers hit three home runs, held the Brewers hitless through six innings, and rolled to an easy 10-1 victory. The Dodgers scored five runs in the second thanks to two Brewers errors, one when Carlos Gomez dropped a fly ball and another when Martin Maldonado threw a ball into the stands. Matt Garza allowed five runs in five innings, but only one run was earned. He also allowed a home run and a walk, and had one strikeout. In the bullpen, Rob Wooten pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing only a walk, and Tyler Thornburg and Wei-Chung Wang also posted scoreless innings.

Rangers 5, Brewers 4

Hector Gomez added to his case for a bench job with a nice game on Saturday. He had an RBI single in the fifth inning, and then hit a two-run home run in the seventh (the Brewers first home run of the spring). Wily Peralta was solid in his spring debut, allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts in two innings of work. However, everything unraveled for the Brewers in the eighth inning as Taylor Williams allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Dodgers 4, Brewers 3

Mike Fiers made his first official start on Sunday, and had a nice day, allowing only one unearned run over 2 2/3 innings for the Brewers. Carlos Gomez had an RBI single in the first inning, and the Dodgers tied it in the third off of Gerardo Parra's error. Matt Clark tied the game for the Brewers in the ninth inning with a solo home run, but Corey Seager won it for the Dodgers with a walk-off double.

Vargas versus Nelson. A match-up for the ages.

The titans of the Cactus League, the Kansas City Royals, take their spotless 5 - 0 record to the hostile environs of Maryvale Baseball Park, where the winless Brewers of Milwaukee look to get in the win column.

And here is the Brewers lineup as penned by famed calligrapher, Scripto Oldengverdana:

Jason Vargas will set cleat to rubber for a few frames while the Brewers will send Jimmy Nelson--the lesser known son of Ricky Nelson--to the mound in the hopes of dispatching of the Royals early and often. Game time is 3:05 PM CT and can apparently be heard on 610 AM in Kansas City and through the MLB app/website for those with an audio subscription who cannot get 610 over the free airwaves.

Today's prospect-heavy lineup will feature Raul Mondesi, Jorge Bonifacio, Brett Eibner, and everyone's favorite Merrifield, Whit. The unicorn/catcher named Erik Kratz will also get a start behind the dish while Salvador Perez hits designatedly. Cam Gallagher fans will get their shot at seeing him donning a Royals uniform in a quasi-major-league game in the later innings.

Taking a look at the losers of the N.L. Central

Chicago Cubs

Starlin Castro- You're a disappointment.  I can't emphasize this enough.  You're not a disappointment in the same way that Mark Prior was.  No, his was due to injury.  You are a disappointment in the same way that Corey Patterson was.  You have talent.  That is not the problem.  You just, well, how do I say it?  You just act like you could not give a sh*t about your production or effort for the Cubs.  You are the new Aramis Ramirez, but without the power.  I saw in person what you are capable of in your MLB debut in Cincinnati.  Back then, it seemed that you cared.  It seemed like you WANTED to play baseball.  Now, you are just like all those other players with unlimited talent but not a care in the world.  Now, the Cubs have a manager in place that will not stand for your careless errors and at-bats where you seem more interested in "allegedly" shooting up another nightclub.  Do you just want the money?  I am sure the Cubs will pay you to go away and get a real shortstop that will get in front of groundballs instead of acting like a matador who is going up against an angry bull.  I loathe you, Starlin.  I almost loathe you more than Jeromy Burnitz.

Cincinnati Reds

Johnny Cueto- Dude, you really need to learn to relax.  Despite your feelings, not everyone in this world is out to get you.  You are always on the verge of fighting someone or something.  I'm surprised you haven't been caught on video beating the hell out of Rosie Red.  Did she not accept your offers for a nice "head" rub?  It's not like your captain is going to do anything about you, either.  He's Canadian.  To him, his goal is to be really nice to everyone so Dick Cheney doesn't run for President and bomb the crap out of Canada.  He's not going to tell you to stop.  He just wants to earn his money, watch another year of NHL playoffs where the Canadian teams all bow out and eat some bacon that tastes like a brick.  That sounds like a wonderful life.  I bet he already bought his retirement home in Moose Jaw.

Milwaukee Brewers

Ryan Braun - You, Ryan, are by far the worst human being ever.  I am not even going to spend any more of my time writing about you.  I'm busy as I have an appointment with Dr. Rosenberg then I am off to join my friends Neil Levine and Gary Howardstein for some blintz and chrain with some gefilte fish.  Mazel Tov, you schmuck!

Pittsburgh Pirates

Everyone BUT Andrew McCutchen - Listen up, the rest of you Pirates.  You all are lucky to have someone like McCutchen on your team.  In fact, you are lucky he even speaks to you.  If I were McCutchen, I would come into PNC Park every night surrounded by an entourage that is in charge of carrying me everywhere I went.  I would eat the most expensive meals in front of you other low-paid players to know that you do not deserve to even be in my presence.  When coming to the plate, I would unzip my pants and pee in the direction of the opposing pitcher I am about to light up.  When rounding the bases after yet another home run, angels would lift me from the sky, carrying me around and lowering my foot onto each base that does not even deserve my precious feet upon it.  Once entering the dugout, my teammates must bow down and then kiss my forearms that supply the quickest bat in all of baseball.  YOU MUST BOW TO ME, DAMN IT!  BOW!!!!!!!!

St. Louis Cardinals

I just can't.  Everything about your organization is the worst.  I am not even able to pick just one.  Maybe Jon Jay?  I just hate that name.  How about the fact that on your 40-man roster, you list FIVE catchers?  That's more catchers than a Saturday night at Rawhide in New York.  Matt Holliday seems like a likable guy, but I might only say that because I cover his father, Auburn's pitching coach, right now.  Matt Carpenter is a taller, less annoying David Eckstein, I suppose.  Mike Matheny is taking over for LaRussa as the manager who "just knows the game.  A REAL game wizard who always goes with his gut feeling."  Screw that.  He's just another unmemorable guy in charge of a team with forgettable players.

Spring Training 2015 Game 9: Reds at Brewers

They did it! They really did it! Brewers win their first Spring Training game.

They are now 1-5.

The Brewers scored first in today's game after a 3-up-3-down inning from Kyle Lohse. Facing Johnny Cueto, Scooter Gennett led off with a single and advanced to third on a line drive single from Jean Segura. Carlos Gomez hit a sac-fly to give the Brewers the 1-0 lead.

Lohse was able to work around a lead-off single and a hit batter to keep the Reds off the board in the second. Superstar Matt Clark flew out that inning too. Superduperstar Jason Rogers lined a single.

A bloop and an error (that's one in every game so far) gave the Reds two base runners in the third inning with one out. A ground ball gave them a chance to turn a double but were only able to get the out at second leaving runners at the corners with two outs. Lohse finished his day with a strikeout to end the inning without allowing a run. He had four strikeouts in total.

Carlos Gomez drew a walk in the third inning and was the only Brewers to reach base in Johnny Cueto's last inning of work.

In the fourth, Jeremy Jefress retired the side in 11 pitches inducing 2 ground balls, 1 fly ball and aided by some stellar defense from Aramis Ramirez, Scooter Gennett, and Logan Schafer.

Gerrardo Parra drew a walk and Martin Maldonado almost took a little girl's head off with his 2-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Brewers a 3-0 lead. Jason Rogers kept rolling with another single and Logan Schafer kept doing what he does best by rolling into an easy double play.

Jonathan Broxton cruised through the fifth inning aided by a pretty solid diving stab by Matt Clark to knock down a line and get the last out.

JJ Hoover took over in the bottom of the fifth. Jean Segura drew a one out walk and Shane Peterson hit a 2 run home run to extend the Brewers lead to 5-0.

Jim Henderson was able to work a clean inning despite a two-out double to Brennan Boesch. He did strike out Todd Frazier.

Minor League Guy took over for the Reds. Pete Orr was able to lead off the inning with a single but was thrown out trying to steal second base. Superduperstar Jason Rogers followed up with his third single of the day. Hunter Morris struck out to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh Wei-Chung Wang got Minor League Guy to strike out. Then he got Minor League Guy to fly out. Wang would end the inning by inducing a ground out from Minor League Guy.

Minor League Guy was able to keep the Brewers off the board in the eighth despite a lead-off double by Minor League Guy. Minor League Guy was able to advance to third on a sac bunt by Minor League Guy. But the inning would end on back-to-back ground outs by Minor League Guy and Luis Jimenez.

Wei-Chung Wang was unable to keep his perfect-o going through 2 innings, but he did pitch another scoreless inning. He got a strike out and induce a ground ball double play after a runner reached on a grounder.

Nothing doing for the Brewers offense in the bottom of the eighth.

Tyler Cravy entered the ninth to close out the game for the Brewers. Minor League Guy worked the bases loaded and then Minor League Guy lined a grounder up the middle to score 2 runs. This being a must win game Ron Roenicke put David Goforth in the game who immediately lobbed a pitch to the back stop allowing the runners to advance to second and third. The next Minor League guy grounded out but got the run in. Goforth ended the game with a strikeout.

Brewers win their first Cactus League game by a score of 5-3. Their record is now 1-5. Time of game was approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes.

The Brewers play the Giants tomorrow at 3:05 pm CT. The game won't be televised but it will be on the radio. Matt Garza is slated to start the game and Minor League Guy is scheduled to get into the game at some point.

I'll leave you with my favorite tweet of the game:
